Trying For A Top Google Ranking, Should You Worry About Your Domain Age?

IN: SEO/Google|Training

If you have been looking for tips on getting a top ranking on Google then you must have come across people saying that the domain age plays a significant role in determining whether or not your site will rank high on the search result page of Google.

Some people do not think that the domain age can affect the ranking of your website but then again, there are also many people who firmly believe that it can influence the ranking of your website on the Google search engine. I personally believe that the domain age does affect the website’s ranking on Google but then again it is not as simple as most people believe it to be. In case Google does make use of domain age to determine the ranking of a website, then it must be because of the fact that older websites have been in existence for a longer period of time and as such, they are more reliable. What’s more, it is also believed that older websites will have fewer chances of spamming. Do you know any website whose main motive is to start spamming, but it waits for a year to get on top of Google? I am sure you haven’t! This is because those websites wish to stay at the top of Google search engine. A website that will spam will not want to waste any time and it will definitely not spend a year to be on top of Google.
It was pointed in the original patent of the Google search engine that it gives special treatment to older websites. However, nothing has been written or said so far to clarify this. In my personal opinion, I feel that the patent’s statement has been altered by the personal opinions of people.

Now let’s find out whether the domain age is really that important in determining relevance and quality. You may not know this but a domain can be set aside for many years and you do not even have to fill the website with content. Secondly, the new domains are generally utilized as 301 redirects to web pages that are more recognized. This is something that big companies often practice. Thirdly, spammers can make use of a website for many years and then the same domain can be sold to a genuine owner who will use it for his personal or business purpose.

If there happens to be any kind of believe that the age of the domain can determine the ranking of a website, then this may be because of the age of the back links that a site may be getting. If a website has been in existence for a long time then the back links are also more trustworthy. On the other hand, there is one limitation. In case the sites that are linked are spam websites then this will not affect the search engine.

It is quite normal for any website to change its ranking in the Google search engine when it is first created but after being in existence for a year or so, the website ranking will generally become less erratic. If you want your website to rank high on the Google search engine then it is necessary for you to create quality content for your site.
